The Scottsburg Middle School Builders Club, one of the Kiwanis Family of clubs in Scott County, conducted a joint project with the Student Council to raise money for the Cat Shelter in Scottsburg. Pictured are members of the Builders Club donating a check to the Cat Shelter for $602. The Builders Club have adopted the Cat Shelter and have gone over several times to assist with cleaning and playing with the cats. Builders Club is a Kiwanis Service Leadership Program for middle school students to teach leadership skills through community service.
The Vienna Finley Elementary School K-Kids held their ceremony to install new officers for 2017-18 and induct new members into the club. President Rachel Pelfrey of the SHS Key Club and President Sarah Everett of the SMS Builders Club installed the new officers. There are sixty-seven members in the VFES K-Kids. Kara Dulaney and Alyssa Elam are the Faculty Advisors and Al Riggle and Eric Mullins are the Kiwanis Advisors. The VFES K-Kids were chartered in February 2016 and were recognized by Kiwanis International as an Honor Club for 2015-16. They were nominated in 2017 for the Mayor’s Good Neighbor Award in the Youth Category. K-Kids is an international organization for elementary school students imbedded in the philosophy of building character and developing leadership through community service. The vision is to develop competent, capable, caring leaders through the vehicle of service. K-Kids is one of the Kiwanis family of clubs in the Service Leadership Program. These young students develop and carry out service projects for their school and community. They also participate in fundraising projects and use the money earned to support local charities or school concerns. Congratulations to the VFES K-Kids!

Sue Petrisin, President Kiwanis International, announced three members of the Scottsburg Kiwanis Club, David Wilson, Dave Church and Al Riggle were recognized as Distinguished Members of Kiwanis International for 2015-16. This recognition is based on the member’s involvement in service projects and sponsoring new members into Kiwanis. The Scottsburg Kiwanis Club has been serving kids in Scott County since 1961. The Kiwanis believe the best way to improve a community is to improve the kids in that community! The Kiwanis hold a dinner meeting weekly at The Kitchen on Thursdays starting at 6:30.
