Dave Bartle, a past president of the Scottsburg Kiwanis Club, recently spoke at their weekly meeting at the Quality Inn. Pictured are from left to right Kiwanis President David Wilson, Kathi Bartle and Dave Bartle. In retirement, Dave and his wife, Kathi, have become woodworkers. Dave brought several examples of their work, including bowls and decorative boxes.
Wood for some of their projects has come from trees on their property. Maple, walnut, cottonwood, poplar and persimmon are among the trees they have used. Dave explained the steps from cutting the tree, curing the wood, cutting the rough form of the bowl from the wood, boiling the wood to remove the sap, cutting the final shape of the bowl, and applying the finish. The final products are beautiful works of craftsmanship that highlight the beauty of the wood.
Dave and Kathi also make tables, rocking horses, quilt stands and other pieces of furniture, and have installed full bathrooms. Their work has been sold at Madison Table Works in Madison, IN.
The Scottsburg Kiwanis Club thanked Dave and Kathi for their presentation and for sharing their hobby.
