The PAX Student Exchange program

The PAX Student Exchange program is currently seeking host families in Scottsburg and the surrounding areas (Madison, Jennings Co, New Washington, Rising Sun, and Milan)

PAX students are 15-18 years old, have studied English for at least three years, and are motivated to learn more about the U.S. by attending high school and living with a host family. PAX students are eager to experience American activities—backyard barbecues, birthday celebrations, and holidays—with their host families. They are covered by their own comprehensive medical insurance and have their own spending money for clothes, school registration/sports fees, toiletries, outings with friends, and other incidental expenses.

Volunteer host families provide PAX students with a bed (can share a room with a sibling of same gender and similar age), a quiet place to study, meals at home, a warm and supportive home environment, and encouragement to engage in everyday American life. With their exchange students, host families experience such activities through fresh eyes while also learning about the exchange student’s country and culture. All types of families—single parents, young couples, retirees, and parents with teenagers—are welcome to host.

Families choose their student that has similar interests and hobbies. Students come to learn about typical life in the US – Families are not obligated to take them on trips, vacations, or to entertain them. Students arrive late July/early August and return home within 2 weeks of school ending.

The local coordinator is the student’s advocate during the home stay, provides support to the host family,
organizes occasional gatherings for students, and communicates monthly with the student and host family.

Families are required to fill out an Application to host and complete criminal background checks – both are done on-line. Once completed, families meet with the local coordinator at least twice before the student arrives to discuss any questions or concerns and to cover student rules and basic hosting information.  Families are never alone in hosting a student – they always have support available to answer any questions.

PAX also offers a referral incentive to any non-profit organization, including church groups, school clubs/teams, and community groups. PAX will pay $150 for each family referral that hosts a student.

For those not sure about hosting – PAX also allows for “Welcome Families”. Welcome families greet students at the airport, help them get acquainted with their new school and community, and get to enjoy the fun of sharing so many “firsts” with the exchange student they welcome into their home. The PAX community coordinator then works to identify another family in the same school community–perhaps among the exchange student’s new school friends–who are able to host the student for the remainder of the school year. TEMPORARY “WELCOME” FAMILIES MAY HOST FOR 6-8 WEEKS.  The time could be shorter depending on the permanent placement

If you or someone you know has interest in hosting an exchange student, please contact me today. There are many exchange students still waiting for their American Family for this fall – and the start of school is just around the corner.

Please help us get the word out,
