The Scottsburg Kiwanis Club donated $500 to CASA to support their annual campaign. Pictured are from left to right is David Wilson, Kiwanis President; Kelly Shelhammer, Executive Director for Scott County CASA; Kelly Shelhammer; Georgianna Elliott, Manager for Kiwanis Corporate member Stock Yards Bank in Austin; and Kiwanis Member LL Lowry. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates, the official name for a volunteer who speaks up for a child’s best interest. Volunteers are trained to become acquainted with the children and make recommendations to the judge. A CASA volunteer is appointed to serve as an advocate for children who are abused or neglected. The CASA volunteer helps provide useful information to the judge to make the best decision for the welfare of the child. CASA volunteers receive no pay. Currently CASA has over 30 volunteers who advocate for over 75 children with open Child In Need Of Services cases. CASA was started by the Hon. Judge Roger Duvall in 2008. More volunteers are needed to advocate for the many children still waiting for an advocate. The CASA Campaign helps raise money for recruiting and training new volunteers. If you would like to become a CASA volunteer or would like to donate to CASA, please contact CASA of Scott County, 36 Forrest Ave, Scottsburg, IN 47170, or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or call 812-752-4748. The Kiwanis are proud of our Scott County CASA volunteers and the invaluable service they provide to our neediest kids!
