URGENT – BizCamp Sponsors Needed
What is BizCamp?
Imagine a town where a 10-year-old can be a mayor. Or a CEO of a bank. These possibilities are all real for Scott County students who attend the Junior Achievement BizCamp, an educational program sponsored by the Greater Scott County Chamber of Commerce and several individuals and businesses.
Students in elementary school ages 9-12 are invited to participate in a one-week summer camp from June 20-25 in Louisville. There they will learn the basic concepts of business and economics and how education is relevant to the workplace.
On the very first day of their very first job, students experience applying and interviewing for jobs, keeping a work schedule, managing personal budgets, and opening a small business. Students operate banks, manage restaurants, write checks, vote for mayor and everything else they can do as adults. The program helps students connect the dots between what they learn in school and the real world.
“BizCamp is good for young kids with a business interest,” said Hayden Garten, who attended the camp last year. He shared that his favorite job was as the DJ of the radio station.
The local school districts provide round-trip transportation, and the building is secured for the children’s safety.
If you know someone who would love to have this unique opportunity provided to them at no charge, please contact the Chamber of Commerce office at 752-4080 to register.
Sponsors are also needed to ensure all students can enjoy the experience. Last year, 51 students attended the camp.
It costs $195 to send each student. Please mail your sponsorship to the Chamber at P.O. Box 404/90 N. Main St.; Scottsburg, IN 47170.
Current sponsors include Jan Hardy, Lakepointe Village, Jason Mount and Scott County Community Foundation.
