Felicia Kalan recently spoke at the Scottsburg Kiwanis Club dinner meeting at the Quality Inn in Scottsburg about UNCHAINED. Pictured are Kiwanis President David Wilson, Felicia and Andrew Kalan and Valerie Wilson. Felicia is the co-founder of UNCHAINED, a Columbus, Ohio based 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to ending human trafficking through education and awareness. Human trafficking is defined as when an individual is coerced or forced into sex or labor against one’s will. Children under the age of 18 are the largest group of trafficking victims, with the largest amount being between the ages of 11 and 14. The forced sex is often accompanied with the victim being given drugs and becoming addicted.
UNCHAINED seeks to empower audiences and youth with the knowledge of human trafficking and ways to combat and report the crime by performing the UNCHAINED Fashion Show. The UNCHAINED Fashion Show was performed for students at Austin High School on April 22nd, and later that day for the general public. The fashion show tells the story of a human trafficking survivor by models wearing garments, music and narration. All money raised by the fashion show benefits the Scott County Partnership and its efforts to end human trafficking and to help its victims.
A graduate of Austin High School, Felicia brought the UNCHAINED Fashion Show to Austin to raise awareness in Scott County. The Scottsburg Kiwanis Club donated $100 to UNCHAINED to support its mission of education about and prevention of human trafficking, and the restoration of its victims. Recently two survivors of human trafficking were awarded scholarships by UNCHAINED to complete their education.
The signs of human trafficking include a young person with an excessive amount of cash, a girl being thrown out of a car, a girl with disheveled appearance at a gas station or truck stop, and a young girl with a significantly older man. If you suspect or see signs of human trafficking, please call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888. English, Spanish and more than 200 languages are spoken.
