Al Riggle recently provided an update on the Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs (SLPs) to the club membership at their dinner meeting at the Quality Inn. Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs include clubs Kiwanis sponsor in the schools to develop leadership and character through the vehicle of community service. It also includes programs like the Bring Up Grades Program to provide incentives to improve academic performance. All five elementary schools in Scott County partner with the Kiwanis to host the BUG Program (Lexington ES, Johnson ES, Scottsburg ES, Austin ES and VIenna Finley ES). The Scottsburg Kiwanis Club currently sponsors three SLPs in Scott County, the Scottsburg High School Key Club, the Scottsburg Middle School Builders Club and the Vienna Finley Elementary School Kiwanis Kids. The Kiwanis Club and these three SLP clubs constitute the Kiwanis Family in Scott County. There are 21 students in the Key Club, 49 students in the Builders Club and 41 students in the K-Kids Club. Two years ago the SMS Builders Club and last year the SHS Key Club won the Mayor’s Good Neighbor Award in the Youth Civic Group category. The Kiwanis also sponsor students to attend a Key Leader Camp hosted by the Kiwanis Indiana District at Camp Tecumseh in Brookston, IN. This is a three day camp to develop leadership skills. One student from SHS attended this year.
